The Irreducible Plural. Research Project on Jenny Holzer

JH

Studying Jenny Holzer's practices and art in the context of Roland Barthe's Image-Music-Text revealed how she blurs the boundaries between authorship and audience participation, art and reception, and private and public discourse, thus inviting spectators to deconstruct, re-contextualize, and transform text and language into different visual, physical and semiotic meanings. Throughout my presentation, I speak about audience participation and interpretation of her work, thus the dissolution of fixed authorship, the multiplicity of meaning in her work, the re-contextualization of text, and the physicality of language beyond its semiotic significance.

In sum, her work appears striking to me as it does not impose a singular meaning and message, but invites dialogue and interpretation. The spectator thus becomes part of the equation: the creation of her work and its meaning through active engagement. The way she manipulates language — projected, engraved, or scrolling — adds a visceral dimension that destabilizes passive consumption and transforms text into a living, evolving experience. And the way in which she displays her work in public venues makes her work all the more accessible to spectators, allowing them to actively engage with it in a non-traditional, non-elitist, contemporary manner.
