Progress Report and Response No.2 - Rose-Coloured Resurrection

Reflection

"We all become living specimens under the spectral light of ethnology (...) of the resurrection of differences (...) in a world completely catalogued and analyzed and then artificially revived as though real, in a world of simulation" (Baudrillard 16).

In response to this quote, I do very much believe that mostly through difference do we as humans live and become valuable to the world, and that each in our own unique type of way. This "resurrection of differences" within global society and culture then becomes cyclic through the evolution of ethnology over time and generations, which all seems to shape and highlight the significance of difference in our lives, allowing us to fully live out our humanness. I second that without difference human lives would not be as lively and valuable, that variety, divergence and rarity is exciting and beautiful - whether resurrected through simulation and artificiality or not.

My project impacts such concepts of difference as it seeks to speak to a broad audience: anyone willing to start or strengthen their healing journey. There is not much cultural knowledge that is necessary for consumers to be aware of to be able to use my designs, as the brand is not made to teach other cultures about its own brand culture, but attempts to define itself through a universal lens as much as it can. Yet, knowledge about Western societal conventions and pressures as well as mental health findings about the human mind and psychological behaviors may provide a benefit to those wanting to use the products more intently and thoroughly.

What is required would be to know the English language, however, as the brand is geared towards an English-speaking audience. In that sense, this mental health brand I am trying to build offers universal application, even if it only exists within its English-speaking audience, and speaks to the individual, not a group or collective of people per se - although mapped out for a Western audience - thereby allowing anyone willing to work on themselves and knowing at least some sort of English to engage with the products, even if that applies only on a surface level. This individuality then simulates a sense of universality almost, but only within the constraints of its target audience.

More Ideas:

  • I am thinking about adding a blog design to this project to highlight that it is important to talk about mental health and to be able to do so accessibly. I would be treating the blog as a page for psychology updates and entries that would go into deeper, more meaningful conversations with consumers than just surface level affirmation
    • would explain harmful psychological habits
    • would specifically reveal the difference between self care and self coddling behaviors
    • would take inspiration from channels like Psych2go on YouTube

  1. I like the idea of a website like this to show how important these things are to you because showing your passions is important.

  2. I really like the whole design of your project. Your sense of aesthetic is very clear, and as I mentioned in class the current color palette is very soothing. You mention in your blog post that your brand is intended to have a universal appeal, and I was wondering how you connect that to the "resurrection of difference." Do you think there could be a customization aspect to the products? Could that be something the blog does? Does the brand focus on the individual or on the romanticized concept of mental health generally?
